The active protein is found extracellularly. 3 transcript variants encoding 3 different isoforms have been found for the GCSF gene. Granulocyte/macrophage colony-stimulating factors are cytokines that take part in hematopoiesis by controlling the production, differentiation, and function of 2 related white cell populations of the blood, the granulocytes and the monocytes-macrophages.
